Lisa Valencia is a Partner with Shea Law who specializes in estate planning and currently serves as the head of the firm’s Compliance Department. She works with clients to implement their estate planning goals, often working directly with financial advisors and trust companies as part of a comprehensive and holistic approach to estate planning. Lisa regularly researches and answers estate planning-related questions for the Shea attorney team, coordinating closely with the firm’s drafting and technology departments to update estate planning documents as needed. She also reviews, prepares, and files documents related to single- and multi-member LLCs.

A highly analytical and detail-oriented professional, Lisa has helped thousands of clients safeguard their families and secure their legacies since joining Shea in 2004 as an Associate Attorney. Coming from a family of teachers, she is a natural educator who enjoys demystifying complex or confusing topics for her clients. She appreciates the counseling aspect of her work and has a well-earned reputation as an empathetic and approachable counselor who is willing to take the time to sit with clients and learn about their family, goals, interests and priorities in order to infuse that information into a legacy plan for their family. As a lover of research and creative writing, Lisa relishes the task of translating a client’s wishes into finely crafted and customized estate planning documents. Every document, no matter how simple or complex, receives her personal attention.

Lisa graduated from Michigan State University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science-Psychology and Law. She earned her Juris Doctor from Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University in 2002. In 2013, her family moved to Nanjing, China on an international work assignment. While in China, she was an active school volunteer and also assisted with regular fundraising events for local charities. Lisa’s family repatriated in 2019 and she returned to Shea Law in early 2021.  She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Probate & Estate Planning Section and the Washtenaw Estate Planning Council.

Outside of work, Lisa enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, traveling, reading, and cooking.

Life is so short—and most people spend a lot of that time working to create a ‘nest egg,’ as well as trying to leave their mark in the world. That mark is different to each person, whether it is a charitable inclination, encouraging heirs to pursue their own careers or personal goals, or simply protecting and providing for their loved ones. Many people just want to simplify the process, and that’s where I come in. No matter what your goal or mark might be, estate planning doesn’t need to be complex. And you certainly don’t need a million dollars to create a legacy.
