Best Family-Led Law Firms 2024: Shea Law

By: Michigan Lawyers Weekly Staff | November 18, 2024

With 17 locations across the state, Shea Law is a nationally recognized, family-led legal institution in Michigan. Over the past quarter-century, the firm has established itself as a powerhouse in estate planning while maintaining a significant presence in complex litigation, including class action and mass action cases.

The firm’s family-centric nature is exemplified by its four-generation involvement, with seven Shea family members holding key positions. From 90-year-old Elsie Shea greeting clients at reception to founder David J. Shea’s daughters managing vital practice areas, and even extending to the newest generation—Camden Shea recently joined the firm as a legal intern—the family’s commitment runs deep through the organization.

With 15 attorneys and a track record of creating over 50,000 estate plans across Michigan, Shea Law has helped recover more than $1 billion in settlements throughout its history. The firm’s success stems from its carefully cultivated culture of collaboration, diversity, and innovation. Building the firm’s environment and culture was not without its challenges; early years saw significant staff turnover before the firm established its current stable, cohesive team.

Looking toward the future, Shea Law has positioned itself at the forefront of legal technology adaptation. The firm is actively embracing AI and automation tools to streamline processes and reduce costs, particularly in estate planning. Their mission is to expand beyond Michigan to become a national provider of accessible estate planning services, driven by the belief that every household should have access to affordable estate planning options.

Beyond their legal work, Shea Law members maintain a strong community presence through educational initiatives aimed at demystifying estate planning for the general public. The firm provides free educational content through various channels and supports the Hantz Foundation, contributing to community transformation efforts in Detroit’s east side neighborhood.

The firm has offices in Southfield, Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, and 10 other cities in Michigan.

We are deeply grateful to Michigan Lawyers Weekly for this honor and to our clients and community for their ongoing trust and support.
